The owners had an existing home with daylight windows in the back, which they wanted to convert into a walkout with lower level patio. A two-tiered L-shaped boulder wall was designed to accommodate the required excavation. A 20’x20’ patio was constructed, along with a waterfall and small pond, drainage system, access steps from the yard to the patio, plantings and outdoor lighting. This extensive outdoor renovation is a must-see!

The typical layout of this 1970s rancher was too small and compartmentalized for the homeowners. A remodeling plan for the main living space full of Pennings’ character was just what they were looking for. Some features this plan included:
• Relocating the stairs and dining room into a seldom-used living room
• Moving the laundry up from the basement
• Creating a larger pantry
• Remodeling and opening up the kitchen
• Clipping a garage corner to help unite the living spaces
• Adding a new 16×20 sunroom off the family room

A 1980s ranch home has undergone a remarkable transformation to accommodate a family’s changing needs and functions. The new cherry kitchen includes stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, and opens to a dining room with a fireplace and a cathedral ceiling in the family room. The exterior was transformed to be more maintenance-free with cement plank siding, wood clad exterior and triple pane windows; 2-foot over- hangs were added to enhance energy efficiency.

Unwilling to accept the limitations of their home, and not wanting to relocate, the owners chose to remodel. We identified goals, created a master plan and then, to accommodate the owner’s wishes, we executed the project in multiple phases. The kitchen has been transformed from the smaller compartment of the 1970s to a larger, flowing area that is the heart of the home. By rearranging existing space we created a much larger kitchen, then fashioned a rear entry and pantry. A makeover of the foyer and powder room, plus redecorating the family room was included. The seldom-used living room has been converted into a library/music room; the dining and study also were updated. To increase energy efficiency, insulation and windows were replaced. Together these changes have totally transformed the character of this home.

Because this kitchen/family room space was very dark and out of date, the homeowner wanted to update both spaces with a lighter, more modern feel and a WOW factor. Impressed in the past with the company’s quality of work, the homeowner once again enlisted the help of Pennings to create the perfect space for them. Some of the features in this “curvy” remodel include a new fireplace with burning rocks and a glass mantel, custom Bench Dog cabinets with eucalyptus and curly maple wood, stainless accents and quartz countertops.
