Hospital Hospitality House of Southwest Michigan
Hospital Hospitality House of Southwest Michigan is…
an independent 501(c)(3) organization that provides free lodging, kitchen and laundry facilities, groceries, and a welcoming, home-like environment for family and loved ones of patients receiving medical treatment in Kalamazoo. In some instances patients, themselves, stay at the House. The House welcomes referrals 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is the only such facility in lower Southwest Michigan. Since opening our doors in 1985, we have welcomed more than 31,000 patient and family guests from all over the country and the world. About three-quarters of our guests hail from Michigan -- two-thirds from our corner of the state.
For thirty years the House has supported a family and patient centered care philosophy; providing a bridge to healthcare by enabling family members to remain at the bedside of their loved one in a critical medical situation despite transportation, distance and/or financial challenges. With the increase in specialized medical services offered in Kalamazoo and in out-patient procedures, and the expansion of our local hospitals into outlying areas, the need for the service we offer continues to grow. Based on data from 2012-2014:
-
850 guests annually
-
3400 guests nights of service annually
-
Top three referring hospital units: Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) & Pediatrics 32% - Cardiac 27% - Burn/Trauma 18%
-
Average length of stay = just over 4 nights; NICU related stays may be months long
-
64% of guests are from the 10 counties in Southwest Michigan
-
82% of the hospitalized patients of these guests are from Southwest Michigan
-
By far the most guest referrals come from Borgess and Bronson Hospitals but also from the West Michigan Cancer Center (WMCC), Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital and the Great Lakes Center for Autism Treatment and Research
-
WMCC referrals are typically longer term stays to allow access to prolonged daily or state of the art treatment regimens not available in their satellite facilities
The current House is located in a 150+ year old home in a historic neighborhood that presents many challenges, primarily related to privacy and accessibility. We need to make changes to best accommodate our guests, fulfill our mission and continue to be a partner in the quality healthcare experience that people expect in Kalamazoo. Therefore, the House Board of Directors has committed to building two “Cottages”, one near the campus of each hospital, that will address these challenges and allow us to continue to be of service well into the future.
We welcome you as a partner as we build for a better tomorrow!
