For 20 years the Home Builders Association of Greater Kalamazoo's Rampathon is a community event that brings together volunteers from the HBAGK, City of Kalamazoo and surrounding communities who have donated their time, skills, and resources to build wheelchair ramps for local Veteran residents who is in need.
In previous years, volunteers from the HBAGK, Senior Services and the Kalamazoo United Way work together on the Rampathon event and construct a wheelchair ramp for a local child and elders with disabilities, or mobility limitations preventing them easy access in and out of their home. The Senior Rampathon took place in May and the Junior Rampathon in October of each year.
The HBA has recentely started a new tradition of the Veteran's Day Rampathon which takes place on Veteran's Day. On 11.11.11 twenty plus volunteers from the HBAGK and Tuesday Toolmen gathered to help build a ramp for a veteran in portage. Michael (the homeowner) is a Vietnam veteran that has recently had a knee replacement and is legally blind after being exposed to Agent Orange while serving.
Michael is currently a member of the Comstock VFW Post 6252, Disabled American Veterans and Marine Core League. Michael and his wife Nancy love to spend time with their grandchildren watch the game show network and attend Victory Baptist Church in Portage.
They say that they are excited to go outside safely and enjoy themselves. This is such a blessing, says Nancy Alford. We have been through a streak of bad times and we are so grateful for the volunteers building this ramp.
If you know of a Veteran in need of a ramp please call Amanda at the HBA at 269.375.4225
If you know of senior in need of ramp please contact Senior Services for additional informaiton.
The Home Builders Association of Greater Kalamazoo, established in 1941, is the professional association for members of the housing industry in Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren Counties as well as the southern halves of Allegan and Barry Counties. Builder members consist of residential contractors, remodelers, and developers. Associate members represent all professions that support the home building industry.
The Home Builders Association of Greater Kalamazoo (HBAGK) exists so that members of the residential construction industry can ethically and efficiently provide our communities with safe, quality, and affordable housing. It is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders [www.nahb.org] and the Michigan Association of Home Builders [www.buildingmichigan.org].
The vision of the organization is to advocate on behalf of members so they maximize their capability for success in the housing industry. The goals of the HBAGK are to promote home ownership, be a recognized voice of the community, support economic growth and development of the community, and to promote the professionalism of members in the industry.
Annually, the HBAGK produces the Home Expo and Parade of Homes. Members of the association present their businesses and finished homes to the community through these events. The organization and its members give back to the community through charity events such as, Fast-Built and Ramp-a-thon.
